A Great Card

November 29, 2010

Every now and then at NWGACU we are reminded of just how unbelievable our products are. When you work with them everyday you sometimes forget what makes them stand out from other similar products.

Case and point: Credit Cards

I have known about our great credit card for a while. I even got to watch our credit card rise to the peak of ‘amazingness’ when the credit card rules changed and other credit cards had to start adding new fees. Our card is different…no…better. Here are some examples of what makes the NWGACU Visa Platinum card better:

Rates

  • National average: 14.74% (as of 11/29/2010)
  • NWGACU: non-variable rate as low as 9.9%*

Fees

  • no annual fee
  • no fees for cash advances
  • no fees for balance transfers

Extras

  • no surprise rate changes for any reason
  • a 25-day grace period
  • Verfied by Visa  – a free service that helps you stay safe when shopping online

Rewards

  • Travel Perks
  • Merchandise
  • Airline tickets – at the 20,000 point level! Most credit cards require 25,000-30,000 points.
  • Gift cards will be available soon with your points!

It’s just an honest card that is easy to use. You won’t ever be overwhelmed by surprise fees or changes to your card. And you can transfer a balance today with no fees at all!

*This rate is NWGACU’s best rate for qualified members. All loans subject to credit approval. Some restrictions may apply. Your APR may vary depending on your creditworthiness. Please ask a Financial Services Officer for details.

Simplify Your Season

November 22, 2010

Your family may be feeling the pinch of the recession even during this holiday season. If that’s the case it could be time to cut back on gift giving. You don’t have to give up the fun of the holidays, however. There are ways to have fun without spending too much.

Here are a few alternatives to gift giving this year:

Gift games - Playing a game with the family can be more memorable than exchanging a new sweater or some socks. Here’s how it works: everyone brings a gift that they would enjoy receiving, wraps it up, and places it in the center of the room. Each participant draws a number which becomes the order for choosing gifts. Player number 1 opens a gift then player number 2 decides whether they would like to open a new gift or ‘steal’ the already opened gift. Each gift can be stolen up to 3 times. After the third steal, the player with the gift gets to keep it. It’s a fun way to enjoy time with friends and family, spend less money, and do some gift giving on a smaller scale.

Exchange only homemade gifts - A few ideas include: a recipe book with all of your favorites, baked goods, Christmas ornaments, calendar with family pictures, or a memory box full of memorable experiences.

Cookie swap: Instead of exchanging gifts with friends, offer a cookie swap as a way to get everyone together and enjoy the holidays. Everyone brings a batch of their favorite cookies to trade and everyone goes home happy with new treats to try!

There are so many ways to simplify this season – let us know what you’re doing this year!

Thanksgiving Dinner On A Dime

November 19, 2010

Thanksgiving is an exciting time of year to gather with friends and family, but can be overwhelming when giving the task to cook for all of said friends and family. These are a few ideas to keep the holiday stress free and budget friendly:

Potluck – Sharing the cooking burden with others makes for less preparation and you also get to share the cost of the meal. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to let others help with the meal – let people choose their favorite side or dessert and you can provide the turkey and the table. Easy as pie!

Off brand turkey – You can save up to $10 per pound when you buy a store brand turkey rather than a popular brand name.

Sides that are in season - Picking out veggies for side dishes can be fun when you’re trying out new recipes, but not when they’re more expensive. Buying foods that are in season will help keep costs down. Stick with turnips, winter squash, potatoes, and other items that come during the winter months. Same with fruit dishes. Apples, oranges, and pears are in season this time of year and will be more reasonably priced.

Cook from scratch - Most of the time buying items that are already made or almost made will be more expensive than cooking those same items from scratch. Make your own pie and pie crust, cranberry sauce, or even bread. Watch out that you’re not spending too much time in the kitchen, but made-from-scratch items will usually taste better and cost less. Can’t beat that!

Another Option

November 16, 2010

Recently I posted some information about our very popular Christmas Club account – the account that helps you save for the holiday season.

Then I started thinking that some of you may not have set up your account in time to save any money for this year! Or you may have, but the amount isn’t quite what it needs to be to get through the next few months. Here’s another option for you: 12-12-12 Holiday Loan.

This loan is the perfect amount to give you a little extra help this time of year, but also comes with very reasonable payments so that you’re not strapped just trying to pay it off.

This loan is available starting October 1 until January 31.

Just another option for you to think about. Let us know how we can help!

Like the Credit Union? Tell Your Friends!

November 15, 2010

I have been working at NWGACU for about 3 years now and I’m loving it! It’s not only a great place to work, but I get to do something that I’m passionate about: talk about money!

But sometimes I get so caught up in telling strangers, students, and members about the credit union difference that I often forget about my friends. The people in my life may know that I have a job at a credit union, but that doesn’t always mean we’re on the same page about finances. I’m just realizing this because I have a great friend that asked me about credit unions  recently.

Friend: “Wait, credit unions are different than banks?”

Me: “Oh wow, we need to talk!”

I proceeded to tell her about how credit unions are owned by their members, not stock-holders and that we’re not-for-profit. These two things make it possible for us to offer fewer fees, much better loan rates, and treat people as people – not customers with earning potential.

Usually we’re able to save people money on loans since our rates are so great, but the saving doesn’t end there. We also have the best credit card around – great rewards, lower rates, and a lot less fees. And I love to tell people about our credit builder loan because we know that people don’t always have good credit, but instead of sending them away, we are able to help get their credit back in order.

Do you love your credit union as much as I do?

If so, it’s time to start telling your friends! Don’t leave them out of the loop – the money-saving, people-loving credit union loop.

Christmas Club and Your Budget

November 10, 2010

Christmas Club is one of our most popular accounts and for good reason. It’s really just a helpful budgeting tool.

It starts each year on November 1 and runs through October 31 of the following year. That means if you set your account up now, you can save money each month until next October and have plenty of money for Christmas shopping!

Some people use it for other types of expenses that come up during this time of the year – either way it’s a great way to save!

You can set up your account to automatically put money into Christmas Club each time your direct deposit comes in or you can choose to add money whenever the time is right.

I love that I never have to think about saving for Christmas – we just set up our account to pay directly into our Christmas Club account and wait for November 1 to start shopping!

Halloween Costume Contest

November 3, 2010

Another Halloween has come and gone and 2010 was a fantastic one! We invited our youngest members to dress up in their most creative costumes, eat some Halloween inspired treats, and compete in our costume contest.

As you can see it was a great turn-out and we were so impressed with the creativity!

The winner of the 0-4 age group was the Krispy Kreme doughnut man and 2nd place went to the cutest cowgirl!

The winner of the 5-12 age group was the creative jellyfish and 2nd place went to the witchy witch.

Congratulations to our winners! They will be getting $50 put into their savings account and 2nd place gets $25. We hope they will use it as encouragement to continue to save for their futures!
