Cash in on Spring Cleaning

February 27, 2012

I noticed tulips coming up in my front yard the other day, and I immediately thought of spring with much anticipation.  For me, the arrival of spring means the warmth of sunshine, new flowers and budding trees to enjoy, and a general sense of things beginning anew.  That’s why I chose to be married in the spring.  There is nothing quite like the sense of hope that the season brings.  It’s my favorite time of year! I love everything about it – the colors, the flowers, the sunshine, the organizing! Wait – what? The ORGANIZING?  Yep, for me, spring also stirs the desire to organize everything – from kitchen drawers to bedroom closets. I think it’s a part of that feeling of new beginnings.

So this year, instead of packing up all those clothes that no longer fit (sigh… losing that last ten pounds of baby weight is a blog post for another day), I put them all on hangers and took them to a local consignment shop.  What a great way to cash in on spring cleaning!  Before you begin the task of sorting and hanging, here are a few quick tips to getting the most cash from your closets.

1.) Before loading up your old treasures, take time to call your consignment store of choice and ask which seasons they are currently accepting. Most shops will be accepting spring and summer clothes now.  This will save you considerable time and energy.

2.) Find out the shop’s pricing guidelines and consignment policies.  Many shops will price items themselves, and split the proceeds with you.  Know the policies in advance to avoid any question later.

4.) Find out if you need to schedule an appointment with a consignor. For stores that don’t require an appointment, it’s best to go on a weekday when there are less people around.

5.) Be present when the consignors are evaluating your merchandise. This will give you the opportunity to point out an item’s value on the spot, and possibly earn a better price.

6.) Most importantly, only bring in items in good, clean condition. Most consignment shops will only accept “gently worn” items. Make sure all items are laundered and wrinkle-free when brought in, otherwise most likely they won’t accepted. Many shops also require the items to be on hangers.

So, the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, my closets are organized AND I have extra cash in my pocket.  Sounds like the perfect beginning of spring to me! What are your spring cleaning tips?

Making Food Fun for Kids

February 21, 2012

Now that my little one is starting to become (gasp!) a toddler, I am learning a lot about ‘kid’ food. She will eat most of what I put in front of her, but like most people, she gets tired of eating the same old thing over and over.

I started looking into healthy and somewhat frugal options to add a little more fun to her diet – here are my kid-friendly findings:

Smoothies. What could be easier? Toss a frozen, chopped banana into a blender with a little yogurt and your favorite berries and voila – a delicious snack!

Monkey bread. Cut up a can of biscuits and toss with sugar and cinnamon. Lightly grease your fluted pan and add biscuits. Pour melted butter and brown sugar over the bread and bake for 30 minutes at 350. Yum!

PB & fruit tortilla roll-up. Smother a tortilla with peanut butter and some of your child’s favorite chopped fruit – bananas, apples, or strawberries would be perfect!

Make your own pizza. Remember these from your childhood? English muffins and pizza toppings – a kid staple.

Veggie pasta. Mix 6 oz cooked tricolor rotini pasta, ½ Tbsp melted butter, ½ cup cooked peas,  quartered cherry tomatoes, and salt and pepper to taste. (via parenting.com)

I’m excited to get started making some new, much more exciting foods for my growing girl! Are there other fun foods we should try?

Decorating a room with a $100 budget

February 6, 2012

I don’t know about y’all, but this unseasonably warm weather has given me spring fever.  When I start thinking about spring, I start thinking about spring cleaning.  I find that spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to do a little decorating as well.  Think about it- one of the easiest ways to decorate your home, especially when you’re on a budget, is re-purposing items that you already have!  Here are some ideas for decorating a room with a $100 budget.

One easy way is to create an accent wall.  Choose one wall in the room and paint it a different, but coordinating color.  It can be bright and funky, like lime green or yellow for your kitchen, or deep and elegant, like maroon or eggplant for your living room. You’re out what?  A gallon of paint or two, a drop cloth, and a paint brush, if you don’t already have these out in the garage.  Think about checking out the paint center at your local home improvement store to see if they have any “oops” paint.  You may just find your perfect accent color at a discount!

While we’re talking paint, what about painting or staining an existing entertainment center, dresser, or cabinets?  You can even play around with some of the fancier textured paints and still come out way cheaper than buying a new piece of furniture or replacing your kitchen or bathroom cabinets.  While you’re at it, you can easily change out the hardware for a spiffy new look.

Here are a few more quick ideas:

  • Cover framed pieces of canvas with pretty scraps of fabric or frame sheets of scrap book paper for wall art.
  • Add or change a lamp.  Look for lamps at your local thrift and discount stores.  If it’s not exactly what you’re looking for, keep in mind that a new coat of paint or a new lamp shade can do wonders to transform it.
  • Cover an old vase with craft glue and wrap it with pretty ribbon or yarn.

Get inspired! You can make a big impact on your room, with a small impact on your wallet!
