Got (Too Much) Mail?

by
mailboxAmericans receive almost 4 million tons of junk mail every year, and nearly half is never opened. Even if you recycle there are still enormous costs in terms of ink, energy to produce, deliver and recycle the paper. And what about the trees? Each year, 100 million trees are used to produce junk mail.  If you saved all the junk mail you received this year, that would equal 1½ trees. And, beside all of these facts, it’s simply aggravating to deal with tons of junk mail coming into your home. Luckily, we have a few tips for you to quickly and easily cut the mailbox clutter.
  1. Cut the amount of mail you receive in the first place by opting out of junk mail lists. Taking the time to officially opt out of junk mail and offers eliminates waste and saves sorting time. Visit these two mail-control websites: catalogchoice.org and optoutprescreen.com to enter your address. You’ll see a difference in just a few weeks!
  2. Keep a recycle bin next to the door. That way you can sort through mail and throw away junk before it comes inside your house.
  3. Go paperless! You can manage your checking and savings accounts and pay bills all without ever receiving a piece of mail. Most people don’t receive a paper check anymore; earnings are simply direct-deposited into their account of choice. If you don’t already have direct deposit, ask your employer how you can sign up. Next, sign up for e-billing with merchants and companies you do business with. Cable bills, internet bills, credit card statements and energy bills can all be received via email. Then all you have to do is log on when bills are due. Not only will you de-clutter your mailbox, you’ll be protecting yourself from identity theft, since many ID thieves steal information right out of people’s mailboxes.

If you’re a Northwest Georgia Credit Union member, you can easily enroll in eStatements with Check Images to receive your monthly credit union statement online. When you enroll in eStatements, you receive monthly notification that your credit union statement is ready. eStatements are stored inside of your Online Banking account. The best part is that our eStatements come with free images of your cleared checks! Get more information here and then sign up through your Online Banking account here.
