Learning Financials in the Classroom

August 4, 2011

Now that almost every student in Rome is back to school and settling in their first week of class, it’s time to start thinking about the next few months. Our financial literacy program, learn.grow., is not only for kids at the credit union but also for the schools in the community. Learn.grow. in the classroom is a series of classroom lessons on various topics that form the foundation for a lifetime of financial success. Here’s the short version of it: a lesson taught by a trained credit union staff member will go into a teacher’s classroom and teach a financial lesson for any age group (K-12) for absolutely FREE!

Teachers and parents: here’s your chance to deepen the knowledge of your student’s financial education straight from the people who know it best. Check it out here!

Brown Bag Luncheon 2011

August 1, 2011

Adorable Centerpieces

On Friday, July 29th NWGACU hosted the annual Brown Bag Luncheon held for new educators in the Rome City and Floyd County areas. It was a successful event with Dr. Mike Buck, Chief Academic Officer for the Georgia Department of Education, as our keynote speaker and over 25 door prizes donated from local businesses! There were about 150 people in attendance including principals, administration, school board members, and of course, new teachers. Lunch was provided by the talented duo, Barbara and Ellen, the owners of Two Can Do Catering.

After Dr. Buck spoke, the new teachers as well as the attendees were filled with happy thoughts about the first day of school and an enlightened view about the future of education. The way he spoke about teachers having an effect on almost every child’s life even made me want to become a teacher for a split second. We were so fortunate to host this event this year, as last year we were not able to hold the Brown Bag Luncheon due to the low number of new hires. We hope this is a sign of what is to come of the education field for the coming years.

Branch Facelift

July 26, 2011

For the past month the NWGACU branch on Dean Avenue was under construction in order to upgrade the outside of the building. Since the branch opened in 1997, it’s been changed a few times to keep up with the brand and current looks. Now it is sharp and looking better than ever! Look below to see a comparison of the branch when it opened and today’s view!

Happy Birthday, Michelle!

July 18, 2011

Today we celebrated all day for our President/CEO, Michelle Stricklin’s 40th birthday! Michelle’s birthday was this past weekend on July 16 and we decided to celebrate at the credit union today! Here at NWGACU we celebrate everyone’s birthday by having breakfast (which is always delicious) and sing them some type of “Happy Birthday” song. On milestone birthdays, like Michelle’s, we go all out and decorate the person’s office, the kitchen, and the hallways. We make it extra special by bringing in tons of great food and of course a HoneyMoon Bakery cake! What a great way to spend a Monday at work – Happy Birthday, Michelle!

We have been granted a Residential Common Bond by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. This means that NWGACU’s membership is more readily available than ever before!

So now it’s your turn to spread the word to your friends who need to Un-bank! Here’s how to join.

Head Indoors for Craft Time

July 12, 2011

When there’s a chance you may sweat just from standing or sitting outside because of the heat, then you know there’s no way you’re taking the kids to the pool today. So how can you lure your kids away from the TV while staying inside with the AC on?

Try this fun financial craft today!

You’ll need:

  • 3 Jars or 3 Tupperware containers per child
  • Labels
  • Markers
  • Stickers

Separate the 3 jars and label each with either Save, Spend, or Share. Then let your child decorate the jars or containers with fun stickers of their choosing. During the craft be sure to explain each jar’s purpose. The child will have to split up their money between saving it, spending it, or sharing it. Explain why saving is a good idea in case of emergencies or for future needs. Explain why spending money needs a goal in order to stay within a budget. Explain what sharing their money can mean to other people, for example donating money to a good cause. Help them decide what would be best for their money. You’ll always want goals with your money and make sure to help them set those goals.

Although this craft may not keep them entertained for the entire day, it’s a great lesson for children to learn. Be sure to encourage them to keep using their jars months after they’ve made them.

What Are They Saying About Credit Unions?

July 7, 2011

Q: What do Dave Ramsey, Clark Howard, and Suze Orman all have in common?

A: Well besides having expertise in personal finance, they love credit unions! Here is what they have to say about credit unions and how anyone can benefit from becoming a member of a credit union. Their opinions are gathered from different sources and quotes on their websites. Visit one of the sites by clicking on their name below.

Dave Ramsey answers a question posted on his site about banks versus credit unions. Ramsey says he hasn’t done business with the mega-banks for years because of poor customer service. He uses a local community bank for his banking as well as credit unions. In most cases, credit unions and small banks don’t get involved in the subprime mortgage debacle. Credit unions are an excellent place to have money.

Clark Howard wrote an article explaining why credit union credit cards are easier to use when traveling overseas. He writes that the New York Times reported that credit unions are beginning to step up and issue cards with the chip and pin technology in place to adopt to the international standard. He also states that it’s often been said that there are no free lunches, but he thinks that credit unions are darn pretty close. Howard writes, when it comes to credit cards, most credit unions offer Visa and MasterCard with interest rates that are about 20% lower than the giant monster mega-banks. He notes that credit unions are a wonderful option available to most adults, but only about 1 in 3 actually is a member.

Suze Orman interviewed with KMBC.com back in 2009 shaming credit card companies, but she also explains what the answer is to these problems. She states, “Here’s the answer: credit unions. They are different than banks. Most banks are owned by their shareholders. They’re responsible to these shareholders and it happens to be on the stock exchange, so anything to increase earnings and profits. Credit unions have members. They’re responsible to the members. So, many credit unions — not all — are giving you no balance-transfer fees, low-interest rates. They’re being ethical and honest.

So there it is folks, aren’t you glad you chose a credit union? And if you don’t have a membership with us or another credit union, did this convince you?

Basement & Attic Treasures

July 5, 2011

As you’re packing or unpacking from your last vacation, are you feeling a little overwhelmed with the things you’ve kept over the past years? Well you certainly don’t want to end up on TLC’s reality show Hoarding: Buried Alive, so maybe it’s time for a garage sale!

A garage sale is no easy task; it takes a lot of effort and help from others to pull off a successful garage sale. You’ll want to plan in advance if you want to sell a lot of your treasures. Plan to have your garage sale on a weekend and if possible, on a Saturday. The garage sale could fail just because of the timing, so make sure you open up at 6 or 7 a.m. and end around 2 or 3 p.m. One of the best times to hold a sale is on one of the few weekends leading up to the beginning of a school year. For more tips on garage sale planning and doing visit Get Rich Slowly, a personal finance blog. This blog post may be a few years old, but it still holds true today.

Good luck with all of your future sales!

Traveling this Holiday Weekend?

June 30, 2011

For this July 4th weekend I’m traveling up to Michigan with my family to see my grandma. We would normally drive the 12 hours to our destination and take the dogs in the car (let me tell you how fun that is), but this time I convinced my mom that we should fly. Taking a plane can be a hassle these days, but it can also save you a lot of time and maybe some money if you buy your ticket at the right moment. If you’re going on vacation this weekend or maybe you’re wanting to plan a last-minute trip, then check out this article from Good Housekeeping about ways to save on your family vacation.

Also, keep in mind that we’re offering DOUBLE ScoreCard Bonus Points for our Visa Platinum credit card holders when purchasing in any summer travel category until July 31. Purchases include airline tickets, lodging, car rental, bus lines, cruise lines, gas, railways, travel agencies, and RV rental. When purchasing in any of these summer travel categories, you’ll get two points for every dollar you spend! Click here for a schedule of our ScoreCard Bonus Points. This is just another reason why we have the best credit card around.

We hope you have a happy and safe 4th of July!
